Makeup Tips for Mature Women
Techniques and Products for Mature Skin
A mature face is not defined by age; rather, it is determined by the condition of the skin. As women grow older, it is important to adjust the application of both makeup products and techniques to accommodate changes in the skin. Aging can lead to a loss of moisture, elasticity, and pigmentation, which can affect how makeup appears and wears throughout the day. Applying too much makeup can result in an unnatural and less approachable look, while using too little may not effectively highlight the face/features. The key is to find a balanced approach that enhances natural beauty without overpowering it. “Less is more.”
Foundation
The best foundation for mature skin can be water, cream, wax or silicone based. Application should be done in sheer layers to control the amount of product used. If very little coverage is required, use the product only where needed and blend. Both silicone and wax-based foundations will work best with a silicone primer.
Setting Powder and Finishing Spray
Avoid excessive use of setting powders. A silicone-based foundation is “self-setting” and will provide a radiant finish. However, a light application of setting powder may be applied where more product is used, such as the under eyes. For extended wear, use setting powder on the entire face and then use a setting spray over the entire finished face. By using the powder, the finish will become more matte and less radiant.
Concealer/Color Correction
The under-eye area may no longer be smooth and may also cast a color that differs from the rest of the face. To correct this, try first applying the foundation all the way up to under the lower lash line. If the foundation does not provide sufficient coverage, add a color corrector where needed. Again, the concealer and color corrector should be applied in sheer layers and then set with a sheer translucent setting powder.
Eyes
First apply a light cream (primer) to the eyelids; it should be lighter than the skin tone. Avoid any light-reflecting products, such as shimmer, glitter or frost, to avoid accentuating any fine lines/wrinkles. Avoid harsh colors and instead select neutral tones. Use a soft liner (no hard lines!) and mascara. With age, eyebrows and eyelashes may lose their fullness and length. Be sure to add the illusion of dimension (full brows) use an eyebrow pencil and then set with an appropriate shade of powder. Don’t be afraid to apply natural-looking false lashes after the mascara has been applied.
Lips
The lips may start to “droop”. Both the size and the shape of the lips can be subtly redefined with a lip pencil. It is not recommended to create an over-extended lip line. Lipstick or lip stain may then be applied. You may wish to set the lips using a one-ply tissue and translucent setting powder. Gloss may then be applied to give the illusion of lush lips. Avoid the use of a lip product that is much darker than the surrounding skin tone (“no hard lines”).
Cheeks
Restore color to the face due to loss of pigmentation. Apply a pop of color in sheer layers directly on the cheek bone and blend up. Typically, for a balanced look, the cheeks and lips should be similar in color. Use a cream or wax blush for flattering, long-lasting color. If desired, next apply translucent setting powder specifically over the cream blush before adding any powder blush.
