Best Sanitation for Cosmetics

The importance of sanitation and proper hygiene is taught in both cosmetology and esthetics programs, but is taught less reliably in the world of makeup artistry. As a result, many makeup artists remain unaware of the risk of cross-contamination and the spread of viruses/infection. To better protect the public, the following tools and techniques are recommended to ensure that we keep our makeup applications safe.

BRUSH CLEANER

Makeup brushes must be cleaned and sanitized between each client. We recommend either Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner, or the more natural Parian Spirits Brush Cleaner; both cleaners will disinfect as well as condition the brush bristles.

HAND SANITIZER

Before and during the course of the makeup application, the hands must be clean and sanitized. We recommend Jao Brand Hand Sanitizer to sanitize the hands without drying out the skin.

DISPOSABLES

Every makeup kit should include disposable mascara wands, doe sticks, pointed cotton swabs, and lint-free cotton wipes and be aware to not “double dip”. Only disposable, latex-free sponges, should be used.

STAINLESS STEEL PALETTE AND PALETTE KNIFE

Stainless steel is non-porous and will not breed germs when wiped and sanitized with 70% alcohol before, during and after each application. In the absence of stainless steel palettes, disposable plastic palette knives may be substituted, but they must be thrown out after each, single use.

MAKEUP SANITIZING MIST

Spray the Sanitizing Mist directly onto the cosmetics, both before and after each use. We recommend using ATTN! Beauty Makeup Sanitizer Mist, which includes an all-natural, organic alcohol. Lip, eye, and eyebrow pencils must also be sanitized. After sharpening the pencil, wipe with a disposable cotton pad, saturated with the makeup sanitizing mist.

Even in the case of liquid mascara, or liquids with applicators, deposit the desired amount of product on the sanitized palette with a disposable applicator, a latex-free disposable sponge, or a clean brush.

MAKEUP REMOVER

Never go to sleep without removing makeup, as old makeup may adversely affect the complexion or cause infection. We recommend using the ATTN! Beauty Makeup Remover Foam, which a clean, gentle product, and can be used with disposable cotton wipes to remove makeup at the end of the day.

Makeup expiration dates should be duly noted. All cosmetics must be replaced before they have reached the expiration date. Information on the shelf life of cosmetics may be found here.

To conclude, we cannot stress enough the importance of cosmetic sanitation. Just as we would not test products from a dirty retail counter display, we should be aware of the dangers of cross-contamination. Strive to be that makeup artist who is distinguished from the others by their focus on sanitary cosmetic applications!
